Otoplasty (Cosmetic Ear Surgery, "Ear Pinning")

Otoplasty consists of reshaping and remodeling the ears usually to correct protruding ears. Although the procedure is more commonly performed in childhood, many adults also seek otoplasty. Dr. Samaha's otoplasty technique preserves the ear cartilage's natural shape while reshaping it, using stitches, to add the necessary curves and align it closer to the head for a natural and more proportionate appearance. Preserving the cartilage rather than cutting it out maintains its natural shape.

Ear Pinning OtoplastyIn younger patients with protruding ears, the surgery is usually performed prior to the start of school. For these young patients, general anesthesia is advised as children are usually unable to cooperate if they are under local anesthesia. For older patients in adolescence or adulthood, a local anesthetic with some sedation induces a comfortable sleep without any discomfort and allows for a faster recovery.

At our centre, the procedure takes approximately one hour for both sides. The recovery is about a week, usually without any pain. There is no need to remove the stitches as they dissolve spontaneously. The scar is hidden behind the ear.
